dormakaba is seeking a Specification Writer in Indianapolis, IN. The Specification Writer is responsible for writing architectural specifications to support end users, architects, and design build firms.   The specification writer will support the entire portfolio of dormakaba’s solutions and products. This interacts with architects, contractors, and owners throughout the process of developing solutions, publishing specifications, complying with owner’s standards, and managing the submittal process. This position reports directly to the Senior Manager of Specification Services and will work closely with the Architectural Services Representatives (ASR), sales leaders within all business units, and Vertical Market BDM’s.  The specification writer will also interact with the training department, product managers and technical services as necessary.   


Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary/hourly range for Colorado residents is $75,000 to $125,000. The salary/hourly range for Connecticut/Nevada residents is $75,000 to $125,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).



  • Provides project specifications covering the entire portfolio of dormakaba products, solutions, and services within all of the North American businesses. 
  • The specification writer position must be capable of writing specifications within the relevant sections of CSI’s Master Format Division 8, 10, and 28. 
  • Ensure that all specs written are designed with the appropriate solutions for the facility and the specific functions of the end user/owner.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all specifications meet relevant building codes and local codes that are applicable to the project
  • Prepares catalog cuts and product specific information as requested by the architect
  • Provides guidance and technical assistance to Architectural Sales Representatives
  • Writes and posts all specifications on the approved platform
  • Work with field sales as necessary to create strong RFA’s in order to displace competitive solutions
  • Develop and nurture relationships with Project Architects (PA) to ensure recurring opportunities
  • Maintain current compliance with AHC, CSI, and AIA certifications
  • Maintain and improve current knowledge dormakaba’s solutions and products
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the manager to support departmental goals



  • Associate degree; technical/vocational school degree or equivalent preferred
  • 8+ years’ experience in the door and hardware industry.
  • Current AHC certification is preferred
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing while projecting empathy with and influencing across a wide audience spectrum
  • Professional courage and commitment to design the best specification for the owner
  • High degree of professional curiosity and effort to stay current on trends within the industry as well as evolving sales and marketing trends across all industries
  • Strong knowledge of security integration systems preferred
  • Knowledge of industry specific software
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
  • Bluebeam PDF software experience preferred
  • Meets deadlines and sets priorities effectively
  • Proven knowledge of IBC-International Building Code, NFPA 101-Life Safety, NFPA 80-Fire Doors and Frames, NFPA 105 and all ADA-Americans with Disabilities Act compliance regulations.
  • Ability to navigate sustainability program issues (LEED, LBC, Green Globes) a plus
