Position Overview

 

dormakaba is seeking a Firmware Engineer based in Indianapolis, IN (hybrid). The Firmware Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing, validation, and production support of embedded electronic products for access control and door hardware solutions. This role works across hardware, firmware, manufacturing, and quality functions to troubleshoot complex technical issues, improve product reliability, develop test solutions, and support products throughout the full lifecycle from concept through production.

What you will do

  • Diagnose and resolve complex product environmental and reliability performance issues across electrical, firmware, and mechanical systems through testing, analysis, and root cause investigation.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance embedded firmware for both production products and manufacturing test systems.
  • Design and implement specialized test solutions, including firmware, automated test fixtures, and validation tools to support engineering and manufacturing activities.
  • Perform root cause analysis and corrective action efforts for manufacturing, assembly, and field quality issues using structured problem-solving methodologies (5-Why, fishbone, 8D, and CAPA)
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and supplier partners to improve product performance, support production readiness, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

 

What we require

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in product development, design, or test engineering, with a focus on electromechanical or embedded products.
  • Proven experience taking products through the full development lifecycle, from concept and design through validation, certification, and mass production.
  • Hands-on experience developing embedded firmware in C for microcontroller-based systems, including peripheral bring-up and serial communication protocols such as I²C, UART, and SPI.
  • Strong understanding of EMI/EMC fundamentals, including design considerations for radiated emissions, radiated immunity, ESD, and electrical transients.
  • Up to 10% travel to support suppliers and contract manufacturers, participate in certification testing, and collaborate with other dormakaba teams.

 

What we prefer

  • Experience testing in extreme environmental conditions, and with reliability methods such as HALT/HASS, thermal cycling, salt fog, humidity/condensation testing, and IP-rating evaluation
  • Background designing or requalifying manufacturing test fixtures and stations
  • Python, LabVIEW, TestStand, or equivalent for fixture host software, test automation, and data analysis
  • Altium (or comparable ECAD tool) for schematic capture, layout review, and design updates
  • Pr with 32-bit ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers, RTOS environments (Zephyr, FreeRTOS), and low-power battery operation analysis
